The broken butterfly

Recently, Jonathan’s favorite book has been "The Very Hungry Caterpillar."  Unfortunately, this adoration led to the back cover being ripped off (complete with a little over half of the last picture of the caterpillar as a butterfly).  It was put into the book hospital (which, unfortunately, has not been visited by a "doctor" for quite awhile), but would often be snuck out for yet another read.  After reading this book over and over again, Bryan and I would sometimes put in little mischievous side comments–like "he met a bird"–meant to go over the heads of our children.  Apparently Jonathan wasn’t as naive as we thought.

A few days ago, he once again brought "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" to me to read.  I read it through then, deciding to play it straight, just read "And he was a beautiful butterfly" at the end–just as the book said.  Imagine my surprise when the sweet little three-year-old voice next to me piped up with, "No, he was a piece of a butterfly."

Bryan and I looked at each other.  Bryan immediately went upstairs and found the back cover (in time for me to hold it up as we finished the second reading of the book).

The book is now fixed.  :)  And Jonathan, of course, then commented, "Now he’s a whole butterfly!"
