My God is better than yours

Just because you read the newspaper doesn’t mean you’re smart.  That’s what I discover day after day in the Reader’s Forum section of the Deseret Morning News.  Here’s today’s slap-upside-the-head letter, printed in its entirety from a reader whose name shall be kept anonymous for dignity’s sake:

The news that Rep.-elect Keith Ellison of Minnesota wants to take the oath of office with his hand on a copy of the Quran is a slap in the face to all the U.S. servicemen who have given their lives to preserve this God-given Republic we live in. When are we going to stand up and be counted? When, oh, when indeed.

So, um, what’s the argument here?  Is it that since Muslims don’t believe in God, taking the oath of office on the Qu’ran is a slap in the face of those soldiers (100% of whom must be devout Christians, of course) who died so that people could choose how they wish to worship (or not)?  Well, then.  Hmm.  Yes, it probably is better for Rep. Ellison to take his oath of office with his hand on the Bible, a book which he believes in his heart to be a deeply flawed and inaccurate conception of God, instead of the Qu’ran.  Best to separate personal convictions from actions before you start working in Congress, so there are fewer conflicts of interest later.  Brilliant!
